YOUR ACCOUNT. YOUR PERMISSION.

Connecting Gmail
with clarity.

Google handles your sign-in. SmartMail uses the permissions you grant to read, organize, and send email.

Gmail core edition. The desktop OAuth client is configured and has been tested with the Gmail API. Branding verification is complete; Gmail data-access verification remains pending. Cloud AI is disabled in this edition. This website does not request Gmail mailbox access.

How the connection works

  1. In the SmartMail desktop app, add an account and choose Gmail.
  2. SmartMail opens Google’s authorization page in your system browser.
  3. Sign in with Google, review the requested permissions, and decide whether to grant access.
  4. Google returns the authorization result to the running desktop app, which completes the connection.

SmartMail does not ask you to enter your Google password on this website. The desktop uses a temporary local callback and PKCE to protect authorization. No separate SmartMail service account is needed for Gmail core functions.

Why mail permissions are needed

A mail client needs permission to read messages so it can display your inbox, and to send and organize messages when you use those features.

The desktop requests openid, userinfo.email, and userinfo.profile to identify your account, and gmail.modify to read and cache mail, retrieve attachments, synchronize read and starred status, organize labels, archive, move messages to Trash, and send messages, replies, forwards, and calendar responses. Gmail tokens stay on your device and operations connect directly to Google. SmartMail does not implement immediate permanent deletion or request the full mail.google.com scope. Other email providers retain their existing protocols.

SmartMail does not need Google Contacts or Workspace Directory permissions. Google’s consent screen describes the access you grant.

Cloud AI is planned for later

The Gmail core edition does not send email content to a SmartMail AI server or model provider. Cloud summaries, AI writing, translation, and mailbox assistants are disabled and excluded from this edition’s OAuth application.

A future AI release requires actual provider and processing disclosures, permission controls, and applicable Google review before activation.

Revoke access whenever you choose

Open your Google Account’s third-party connections, select SmartMail, and remove its access. You can also remove the mailbox from SmartMail’s account settings. Revoking access stops future authorized access; it does not automatically erase data cached on your device.
